U. S. may buy 'spy' building

A five-story apartment building nestled between the old U. S. Embassy building and the new compound on Bolshoi Devyatinsky Pereulok might have a new landlord in the near future: the American government.

The apartment building, owned by the Russian government, has been the subject of debate for years due to its proximity to America's diplomatic headquarters. Rumors have circulated that the former Soviet government placed KGB spies as tenants inside the apartments. Russians and Americans currently rent apartments inside.

A State Department report issued shortly after this month's U. S. -Russian summit in Washington said that the apartment building was currently under discussion on Capitol Hill.

It said no further information would be released on the subject until the topic had been reviewed by American government officials. No time frame was given.

President Boris Yeltsin's press attache said his office had no iniormation on the subject.
