City probing, Phillips case

The Moscow city prosecutor's office has taken over the investigation of Martha Phillips's murder.

Dmitry Markov, deputy prosecutor of the Krasnopresnenskaya police station, said the transfer indicates that the case has been "moved to a higher level".

Phillips, 43, an American citizen and Trotskyist activist, was found stabbed and strangled Feb. 9 in a Moscow apartment.

Last month Phillips's family in Colorado and her party comrades said that they suspected the murder was politically motivated, and charged police with a sloppy investigation.

Markov said the Phillips file was delivered to the city at the request of the prosecutor's office.
