Gays wage hunger strike

Twenty Russian gay and lesbian activists waged a three-day hunger strike Wednesday to demand the repeal of Article 121 in the Russian criminal code, which deems male homosexuality a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

"We did this so that the people in power pay attention", said one of the participants, Lena Vasyukova. "All our written appeals have remained unanswered".

The draft of the new Russian legal code, issued last month by the Ministry of Justice, has dropped the offending article, but activists want the law revoked immediately.

There have been no recent cases invoking the article, but men are still in prison because of their sexuality.
