Ghanaian student murdered

A 26-year-old student from Ghana died Saturday in his room in a student hostel near VDNKh, apparently the victim of a robbery. This comes just one week after guards at the hostel walked off their jobs demanding higher wages. Samuel Ganyo, a third-year student at the Moscow Civil Engineering Institute, was found dead in his fifth floor room at about 7: 30 a. m. Saturday after an unidentified person called the hostel director to report a robbery in room 580, Ganyo's room. According to a police officer at station No. 106, intruders gagged and blindfolded Ganyo with torn strips of cloth and tied his hands and feet with shoelaces and bound them together behind his back. The student's room had been ransacked and his VCR was stolen, police said. Rasheed Inusah, first secretary consular of the Ghanaian Embassy, who was also called to the scene, said that according to doctor's initial observations ""there were indications that Ganyo died of suffocation. He was bound so tightly and had been gassed.

Canada's special guest: Thirteen months of refuge in the embassy

While Russia experiences the exhilaration and hardship of its newfound freedom, Dmitri Berman - who may be Moscow's only political asylum-seeker - remains trapped. Berman was first behind prison bars in Ukraine. Now, for the past 13 months, he's been behind the plush walls of the Canadian Embassy on Starokonyushenny Pereulok. The charges on both sides are serious. The Ukrainian government claims Berman, a 27-year-old Jewish blue-collar worker, murdered a Moldovan soldier with a sharpened screwdriver one night in 1988 in a Ukrainian village. Berman claims he was set up, and then brutally tortured, both physically and psychologically, by Ukrainian prison officials. The Canadian government believes Bermaa's story, said one high-placed official who did not want to be named. Berman was convicted of murder in 1988.
