Sidewalk Survey: Thoughts on Viktor Chernomyrdin

Aleftina Seleznyova, 65, engineer.

"I don't know this man, I have no information about him. All I know is that he is one of the old ministers but I don't remember what exactly he was doing there. Of course, I regret that Gaidar got thrown out. At least they could have chosen that other one. I can't remember his name. I am very pessimistic about the whole thing. Maybe something will get better, but I somehow doubt it".

Yevgeny Andreyev, 45, colonel.

"I am happy. I woke up today and for the first time realized that my wish has come true. His knowledge is from practice, he is very experienced, qualified. I know his background, he has two Ph. D's, he is an engineer. I am absolutely sure that things will immediately get better. He is the only smart person in the government. Gaidar might have been O. K. in a classroom, but not in practice".

Dima Sukhov, 16, student.

"I don't know. All I know is that he was in the old Soviet government. This is really weird. I would not trust him, especially now, when there are so many old hardliners in the current parliament. I thought that they would keep Gaidar. I didn't think it would go that far. I don't think anything will change radically, we are just wasting time now. I was hoping a little bit when Gaidar was there, but not any more".

Oksana Novikova, 21, accountant.

"I don't think life will be better now. Probably worse. I knew that Gaidar would not be able to remain in his position, but I was hoping they would find a better substitute. I know absolutely nothing about this man. I first learned his name when he appeared on television. In the parliament itself they could not agree. Some thought he was great and others hated him. I don't know who to believe".

Akim Yakovlevich, 67, retired officer.

"I am glad that Gaidar was replaced, I didn't like him at all. I know a lot about Chernomyrdin. I know that he used to be gas industry minister and worked in the Central Committee. He's got good connections. The only thing that I worry about is that the rest of the Gaidar government stayed and this will certainly inhibit his work. We should replace the whole government".
