A Stormy Congress Over

The Seventh Congress of People's Deputies concluded its stormy winter session Monday after two weeks of debates that plunged Russia for a while into its worst crisis since the August 1991 coup.

President Boris Yeltsin's clashes with the deputies as they sought to reshape Russia's political system resulted Thursday in a head-on collision so severe that several politicians warned that civil war could break out at any time.

In the end, the conflict was resolved peacefully through the mediation of Valery Zorkin of the Constitutional Court.

The Congress gave Russian television viewers the unusual sight of a brawl breaking out among the deputies. For many, it was a cliffhanger that left them in terrified suspense about the fate of their country until the very end.
