Miners Head for Moscow

About 2, 000 miners from the Kuznetsk Basin and Rostov regions of Russia are expected to set off for Moscow on Tuesday to show support for President Boris Yeltsin, according to press reports.

Izvestia said the visit was timed to coincide with next week's Congress of People's Deputies session, where Yeltsin is expected to face strong opposition.

During the previous Congress in April, 200 miners formed a human corridor between the Hotel Rossiya, where the delegates stay, and an entrance to the Kremlin. With shouting and posters, the miners let the delegates know their opinions as they walked to and from the Kremlin.

Ten times as many miners and other workers will come this year because the stakes are higher, a group called "Miners for Reform" said in a statement.

The group warned against any attempt by the Congress to "rebuild the previous totalitarian order under the guise of parliamentariainism".
