An American company is revamping security systems at 680 main airports in Russia and other airports in ex-Soviet republics.

EG&G Astrophysics Inc. , of Minneapolis, which produces about 90 percent of the x-ray machines in North America and Mexico, has already sold a handful of $75, 000 x-ray machines to Russian airports.

Russia will need to buy at least $70 million worth of machines within the next five years to meet international security standards, said a company spokesman.

The Americans were explaining their equipment this week to airport directors at a security training center across from Sheremetyevo I.
