Mattheus Goal Wins Title for Bayern

HAMBURG, Germany -- A magical goal from World Cup star Lothar Matth?us steered Bayern Munich toward a record 13th German league title with a 2-0 victory over lowly Schalke on the last day of the season. Meanwhile in England, Everton came back from 2-0 down to beat Wimbledon 3-2 and escape relegation as Sheffield United was sunk by a 90th-minute winner at Chelsea on a dramatic final day of the premier league. Matth?us, 33, curled in a free kick from outside the area in the 50th minute to take the tension out of a tight Saturday game in Munich. Ten minutes later Brazilian Jorginho fired in another blistering shot from the edge of the area to put Bayern one point clear of second-placed Kaiserslautern, which kept up the pressure until the end with a 3-1 win at Hamburg. Both Bayern and Kaiserslautern, the 1991 champion, had a chance to clinch the title on Saturday, the fourth consecutive year the Bundesliga has gone to the last games of the season.
