Russian figure skater and two-time Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko, who pulled out of the individual competition at the Sochi Games with a back injury, wants his spine surgery to be broadcast live.
"I think a lot of people will see it, because I want to show how it happens" Plushenko said of his operation, Itar-Tass reported Monday.
Plushenko, who helped Russia to win team gold at the Sochi Games, said that a number of the metal screws in his back came loose when he mistimed a jump during the warm up before his short program.
Plushenko, 31, did not did disclose any details about which channel would broadcast the operation — scheduled for March 2 — saying only that it would be "live."
Soon after the injury he declared his intention to retire from the sport, but later reversed his decision and said that he could make a comeback at the next Winter Olympics.
"A year ago I had surgery, and I had to hurry back to perform at the home Olympics," Plushenko said. This time "I need to recover properly, without rushing, so that a similar thing doesn't happen again."
