A bomb went off near a mosque in the North Caucasus Friday, killing two people and smashing the windows of nearby houses, a police spokesman said.
The homemade bomb exploded at 3:20 a.m. at the mosque near the town of Baksan in the republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, the spokesman told Interfax.
Investigators found "the body parts of two men" at the blast site, an unidentified security official said, adding that the victims might have been the bombers themselves.
The device might have gone off before they had time to flee, he said.
A Kalashnikov assault rifle that was stolen during an attack on traffic police in the Baksan district was also found at the scene of the blast.
Police said the bombers may have been "members of an underground gang," without providing further details.
