Seventy-three years ago today, on Aug. 21, 1940, Leon Trotsky died in Mexico, a day after an attempt was made on his life by the Spanish communist, and Soviet agent, Ramon Mercader. Trotsky, one of the most prominent figures of the 1917 revolution, was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1929 as Stalin sought to tighten his grip on power.
