Wiki commonsA reconstruction of Zaporizhian Sich.

Zaporizhian Sich, a Cossack stronghold on the banks of the Dnieper river, was liquidated on the orders of Catherine I, 238 years ago today, on Aug. 14, 1775. The decision to destroy Zaporizhian Sich was taken after a Cossack-led rebellion in Kazan, though many of the inhabitants managed to escape to the Ottoman Empire, where they settled on the banks of the river Danube.
