YOGYAKARTA, Indonesia — Rescuers were searching Tuesday for a Russian hiker who went missing while climbing Indonesia's most volatile volcano on the main island of Java, officials said.
Ehbrehnin Yeveny, 26, on Saturday was reportedly climbing the southern side of Mount Merapi, a popular site for visitors, when he sent a text message to his girlfriend asking for rescuers to come find him after he lost his way, said local search and rescue agency spokesman Teguh Supriyadi.
Six search-and-rescue teams of 48 members were mobilized Tuesday to look for Yeveny, whose last message early Monday said he was in a river and walking toward lights he believed were coming from a town.
His footprints were discovered Monday, but he had moved on and the teams were not able to track him, said Pristiawan, another rescue official.
