TheáLevada Center has released a poll showing that as more Russians learn ofáKremlin critic Alexei Navalny, more ofáthem believe he is being prosecuted foráwrongdoing andánot as retribution foráhis activism.
Theápoll, conducted fromáJuly 18 toá22 and published Friday, showed that 21 percent ofápeople asked did not know who Navalny was.
Sixteen percent had never heard ofáthe KirovLes trial, ináwhich Navalny was convicted last week. Twenty-seven percent said they had heard ofáthe case, while 31 percent said they had heard ofáit, but did not know what it was about.
Ofáthose who said they had heard ofáthe case, 46 percent said they believed theácourt case was connected toáNavalny's public activities as aáwhistle-blower. InáJune, that figure was 47 percent, down fromá54 percent ináMay.
Inácontrast, theáproportion ofáthose who had already heard ofáNavalny andáwho said theácase had been opened because he broke theálaw while working as anáadviser toáthe governor ofáthe Kirov Region grew toá32 percent, fromá28 percent ináJune.
Theápoll was conducted among 1,601 adults iná45 regions ofáthe country. Theámargin ofáerror did not exceed 3.4 percent.
