A man was shot in the leg in one of Moscow's metro stations after he picked a fight with a police officer and tried to take his gun, a news report said Friday.
The incident took place at about 11:55 p.m. Thursday, when a police officer at Universitet metro station was sent to deal with two men who were in breach of public order, the Interior Ministry said in a statement carried by RIA Novosti.
The men took offense to a comment from the officer and knocked him over, kicking him several times while he was down. The officer managed to fire a warning shot into the air, but instead of being deterred, the men tried to seize the gun.
At this point, the policeman shot one of the attackers in the left leg before calling an ambulance.
Both men have been detained by the police.
In another unsavory episode on the metro this week, a 39-year-old Uzbek man was detained Tuesday after he was caught stealing a mobile phone from another passenger.
Having waited until the car doors were closing, the man grabbed the phone and jumping from the carriage. But he should have looked before he leaped as police who witnessed the incident apprehended him immediately.
The subject was arrested and later charged with theft.
