Josef Stalin was given the title Generalissimo after World War II
Sixty-eight years ago today, on June 26, 1945, the word Generalissimo — a title previously bestowed upon some royals and highly-ranking military figures Ц first appeared in the Soviet Union. The next day, Josef Stalin became the only Soviet citizen to ever receive the title, when he was rewarded for his outstanding service to the Motherland.
