Thirty-one years ago today, on June 17, 1982, the Ka-50 armed helicopter — otherwise known as the Black Shark — took flight for the first time. The Ka-50 is the only helicopter in the world that is capable of hovering for more than 12 hours and was the first ever helicopter to be fitted with a pilot ejector seat. They were adopted for service in the Russian armed forces in 1995.
