Today in History, June 11

WikipediaA painting depicting scenes from the Salt Riot in Moscow, 365 years ago today.

365 years ago on June 11, 1648, a violent uprising — commonly known as the Salt Riot — took place in Moscow in opposition to a universally-imposed tax on salt. With riots also taking place in a number of other Russian towns, the tsar was forced to make concessions to the tax, although the most active participants in the riots were later rounded up and executed.
