Two fraudsters have cheated a Moscow pensioner out of 1 million rubles ($30,000), the Interior Ministry said Thursday.
The scam took place on Kharkovsky Proezd Wednesday, when two women under the guise of social services workers called at the 82-year-old's apartment and offered to exchange her money for new notes. Instead, they made off with the sum, Interfax reported.
The old lady handed over roughly one million rubles, kept in the apartment by her 51-year-old son. As they began to count the money, one of the unknown women asked the elderly lady for her pensioner's identification card. When the unfortunate pensioner returned with the document, she discovered that the swindlers had made off with the cash.
A criminal investigation has been opened into the incident.
