Eighty-six years ago today, on June 3, 1927, Moscow's Krasniye Vorota — or Red Gates — were demolished by order of the city administration. The gates, which were first built in 1742 to commemorate the coronation of Elisabeth Petrovna, were last renovated in 1926 but were removed a year later to help ease traffic flow problems.
