More than 130 solar-powered bicycle rental points will appear across Moscow by the end of June, BFM.ru reported Monday.
The rental points will be open 24 hours a day, and the scheme will allow cyclists to take bicycles at one rental point, and leave them at another. The launch date is June 1, however, only around 50 stands will be operational by then, Deputy Mayor Maxim Liksutov said.
Rental will cost 50 rubles ($1.60) for the first hour.
To use the system, cyclists will need to register on an on-line portal, velobike.ru. Users will also be able to suggest places for the installation of new rental points, the report added.
The site has yet to be launched, and it is unclear whether it will provide information in different languages for non-Russian speakers.
The initiative is a joint project of the Mayor's office and the Bank of Moscow.
Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that cycling is "gaining in popularity" and that infrastructure for cyclists needs to be developed intensively.
