The Peter and Paul Fortress was established in St. Petersburg 310 years ago today, on May 27, 1703 — a day that has come to mark the founding of the former Russian capital. Soldiers, members of the peasantry and prisoners from the ongoing Russian-Swedish war were all involved in the construction of the fortress, which was completed in October 1703.
