The drifting ice station Severny Polyus-1.
Seventy-six years ago today, on May 21, 1937, the world's first drifting ice station Severny Polyus-1 was established in the North Pole. The research carried out at this and similar stations has contributed greatly to our understanding of the Arctic environment.
