Ninety-five years ago today, on April 8, 1918, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic replaced the Russian tricolor flag with a red flag, symbolizing the recently established Communist government of the country. The red flag with the hammer and sickle was only introduced for the whole Soviet Union in 1923.
