Theáfirst day ofáChinese President Xi Jinping's official visit toáRussia onáFriday saw theásigning ofá35 bilateral agreements touching onáeverything frománatural gas toácultural exchange toárabbit husbandry, as well anáoverarching commitment toádouble bilateral trade byá2020.
As expected, theátwo sides devoted much ofátheir attention toáenergy, signing agreements toácooperate onáthe construction ofáan oil refinery ináthe Chinese port city ofáTianjin, as well as onáprojects toáboost oil trade andásend natural gas andáelectricity fromáthe Russian Far East toáChina.
But also sealed deals onácultural centers andáradio stations, as well as two separate agreements that will see theácountries boost state andácommercial cooperation onárabbit husbandry.
Bilateral trade rose byá11.2 percent last year toáhit aárecord high ofá$88.2 billion, andáXi's visit was accompanied byáa pledge toágrow trade toá$100 byá2015 andá$200 billion byá2020, according toáa statement onáthe Kremlin's website. China is already Russia's largest trading partner.
Xi andáPutin used theáoccasion toáaffirm their "unprecedentedly" warm ties andáshared intention toáchampion non-intervention andámulti-polarity onáthe international level.
Russia andáChina have stood shoulder-to-shoulder against intervention ináSyria's bloody civil war andápushed forárestraint ináaddressing Iran andáNorth Korean nuclear ambitions, positions that have often put them atáloggerheads with theáUnited States andáits European allies.
Xi described Putin as his "old, good friend" andásaid theádecision toámake Russia his first foreign visit was aásign ofáthe "strong andáspecial nature" ofáChinese-Russian ties.
