Today in History: March 20

Yelena Glinskaya
478 years ago today, on March 20, 1535, Yelena Glinskaya introduced Russia's first unified monetary system through a currency reform that withdrew all old and shoddy coins from circulation in favor of new silver coins minted by the state. Glinskaya served as regent of Russia for five years until her son, Ivan the Terrible, was old enough to reign.
