Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin onáFriday called forátougher control over budget spending onáequipping theáarmy with state-of-the-art weapons after aácheck uncovered violations that lead toáover 16 billion rubles inábudget losses.
A check byáthe Federal Service foráDefense Contracts revealed about 1,500 cases ofáillegal use ofástate moneyáearmarkedáfor defense spending, RIA Novosti reported Friday, citing theáwatchdog's statement.á
The misuse cost theáfederal budget 16.1 billion rubles ($536 million), theástatement said.
The defense industry gets "huge money,"ábut since spending is not being controlled properly, such violations happen, Rogozin said, adding that those funds "fuel theáinterests ofámany different kinds ofávultures."
He also pushed forátightening punishment foráembezzlement ináthe defense industry andárecommended theádefense watchdog carry out unscheduled checks "when even theásmallestádoubts arise about theálegal nature andáefficiency ofáusing those funds," Interfax reported.á
