OSLO — Three veteran activists are among the likely Russian candidates for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, people familiar with the committee's deliberations said.
Human rights activists Lyudmila Alexeyeva, the founder of the Moscow Helsinki Group, Svetlana Gannushkina and Lilia Shibanova, the head of independent election watchdog Golos are possible nominees.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee, which will announce its decision Oct. 12, received a record number of nominations for this year's award.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos was certain to be on the list thanks to his efforts to end half a century of conflict with the FARC guerrillas. Another shoo-in is Myanmar's Thein Sein, who led a transition from decades of dictatorship, people familiar with the committee's deliberations said.
