Son of Supreme Court Judge Arrested

The son of a senior Supreme Court judge has been arrested on suspicion of accepting almost $30,000 in bribe money in exchange for guaranteeing the outcome of a ruling by the court, Interfax reported Wednesday.

Vladimir Karpov, son of Deputy Supreme Court Chairman Alexander Karpov, was detained Saturday in Oryol after accepting 1 million rubles ($28,000) in bribe money from a local resident, the report said, citing a police source. A local court sanctioned the younger Karpov's arrest, and he remains in custody on charges of extortion, Interfax said.

It is unclear whether Karpov, 35, is suspected of acting alone or with an accomplice, a regional official told Kommersant.

The suspect's father was born in the Oryol region and headed the regional court from 1988 to 2004. He oversees criminal cases in the Supreme Court.
