Chichvarkin's Lawyer Denies Charges

The lawyer for former Yevroset chairman Yevgeny Chichvarkin on Monday described kidnapping and extortion charges sought by prosecutors against his client as "gibberish."

Chichvarkin, currently in Britain, will contest the charges at a court hearing on Wednesday, lawyer Vladimir Zherebenkov said in a telephone interview.

Prosecutors on Jan. 15 announced charges against Chichvarkin, saying he was involved in kidnapping Yevroset's logistics supervisor in 2003 and extorting money from him, Zherebenkov said.

"There are some economic-political motives" behind the charges, he said.

The Investigative Committee will not comment on the case, a committee spokeswoman said.

The Basmanny District Court on Wednesday will hear a request from prosecutors to arrest Chichvarkin, Zherebenkov said.

Chichvarkin is likely to stay in Britain until the hearing, he said.
