Politkovskaya Murder Trial Postponed

The Moscow District Military Court on Sunday postponed the Anna Politkovskaya murder trial after one of the defendant's lawyers failed to appear, RIA-Novosti reported.

The court was planning to hear testimony Sunday from defendant Ibragim Makhmudov, one of three men charged with participating in Politkovskaya's murder in October 2006.

Makhmudov's lawyer, Saidakhmet Arsamirzayev, was working another case in Petrozavodsk and was unable to attend the hearing. The trial is to resume Jan. 19, RIA-Novosti reported.

Makhmudov's brother, Dzhabrail Makhmudov, is also charged in Politkovskaya's murder, along with former Moscow police officer Sergei Khadzhikurbanov. Politkovskaya, who wrote critical reports about human rights abuses in Chechnya for Novaya Gazeta, was shot dead in her apartment building in October 2006.
