Merkel to Meet Medvedev



BERLIN -- German Chancellor Angela Merkel will travel to Sochi next month to meet President Dmitry Medvedev, the German government said Wednesday.

Merkel will make a one-day trip on Aug. 15, the German government said in a statement. It did not say what she might discuss with Medvedev.

Medvedev visited Berlin and met Merkel in early June on his first trip to the West since being sworn in the previous month. (AP)




Tajiks Jailed for Murder



DUSHANBE, Tajikistan -- A court in Tajikistan convicted two men Wednesday of murdering Russian television reporter Ilyas Shurpayev and sentenced them each to 21 years in prison.

The Supreme Court found Masrudzhon Yatimov and Nadzhmiddin Mukhiddinov guilty of the robbery and premeditated murder of Shurpayev, a Channel One reporter who was found dead in March in a Moscow apartment with a belt around his neck and multiple knife wounds. (AP)
