Yandex Closes Deal On City Traffic Site

Yandex, the country's largest search portal, has finalized a deal to buy Smilink, the biggest street traffic monitoring company, the companies said in a statement.

The cost of the deal was not disclosed.

The sale, effective next month, would not affect the working of Smilink, whose current leader, Pavel Golden, would remain head of the company, the statement said.

Smilink Information Agency, the main company collecting and distributing information about traffic in Moscow, has sensors installed around the city to monitor jams and gridlock.

Since its creation in 2001, Smilink has grown as the main provider of information about traffic jams in Moscow, supplying information systems for both the traffic police and City Hall.

Yandex has relied heavily on statistics provided by Smilink since it created its own online traffic monitoring system in 2006.
