6 Inmates Flee Siberian Jail
Six inmates, including one convicted murderer, have escaped from a detention facility in the Zabaikalsky region in eastern Siberian, Vesti.ru reported Monday.
Local police were still searching for them late Monday.
Among the six men, aged 16 to 40, are one convicted murderer and five others suspected of murder and other violent crimes.
They escaped from a pre-trial detention center in the region’s Khiloksky district at around 9:30 a.m. Monday after breaking through a window grill.

4 Prisoners Dead in Urals
Prosecutors are investigating the deaths of four convicts who they say attacked staffers at a prison in the Ural Mountains.
Prosecutors in the Chelyabinsk region said that guards used rubber truncheons on four inmates who attacked employees with razors and improvised blades on Saturday, injuring five.
Guards subdued the inmates and put them in separate cells, the regional prosecutor’s office said.
All four died later the same day, it said.
The regional prosecutor’s office said in a statement Monday that it will investigate whether the inmates’ deaths resulted from abuse of authority by the guards who responded to the attack.

2 Killed in North Caucasus

NAZRAN, Ingushetia — One police officer and one rebel have been killed in separate incidents in the restive North Caucasus region, officials and news reports said Monday.
The police officer was killed when attackers opened fire Monday on a police post in Ingushetia with automatic weapons and grenade-launchers, a police spokesman in the republic said.
Meanwhile, an armed militant was killed Monday in Grozny, the capital of neighboring Chechnya, while resisting arrest, Interfax reported.
A serviceman was wounded late Sunday by a homemade explosive device in southern Chechnya, Interfax said.
