Irkutsk Man Kept Bears on Balcony

An Irkutsk man is facing a possible fine after police caught him keeping a bear in his apartment, Gazeta.ru reported Thursday.

Frightened neighbors went to police after they heard growling noises coming from the man's balcony, where, upon inspection, they saw two bears, the web site said.

When police arrived, however, they could only find one bear cub, which the man attempted to hide in one of the apartment's rooms. The man refused to tell authorities what happened to the second bear, Gazeta.ru said.

The bear cub is currently being held in a kennel, and authorities plan to release it into the wilderness.

The man captured the bears while hunting in the Sayan Mountains outside of Irkutsk and brought them home to entertain his children, Komsomolskaya Pravda reported.

Gazeta.ru cited experts as saying that the man could only have captured the bear cub if he had killed its mother.

Under Russian law, individuals can be fined up to 1,500 rubles ($64) for the unlawful transport of wild animals.
