Arkady Novikov, a leading restaurateur and one of the founders of Moscow's modern restaurant scene has been awarded the Italian Order of Merit of the Republic, or Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana. Novikov was awarded the order for his contribution to the development and popularity of Italian culture and the strengthening of international ties. Previous recipients of this award include Nikita Mikhalkov and Boris Yeltsin.

In any case, Novikov's restaurants aren't resting on their laurels as they gear up for the upcoming Orthodox Easter on April 27. While most of his restaurants will be baking kulich Easter cake and painting eggs, several have some extra activities planned. Cafe Vesna will be preparing an Easter variant of the traditional Italian panettone made with raisins and candied fruits as well as, naturally, painting eggs. Sirena will be taking special orders for giant chocolate Easter eggs. Made on request, the 45-centimeter eggs come with or without a gift inside -- cost per egg 5,000 rubles. Peperoni will be preparing three sizes of kulich Easter cakes (100, 400 and 800 grams) as well as paskha Easter cake, which will all be available on the first floor in the gastronomic boutique. Piramida is to treat guests to kulich and painted eggs.

Swiss Cafe in the Swissotel Krasnye Holmy Moscow is also preparing a special Easter brunch for April 27. Guests will naturally be able to enjoy kulich, paskha and painted eggs as well as an Easter wreath made from poached eggs and batter braided together and baked. Other dishes to be offered include foie gras pan-fried with either apple or fig sauce, fresh oysters, grilled veal rack with tarragon and tomato sauce as well as other dishes. Brunch starts at midday and runs through to 5 p.m., at a cost per person of 3,500 rubles excluding alcoholic beverages.
