Matviyenko Suspects Freed

Jurors at the St. Petersburg City Court on Monday acquitted three people of trying to assassinate St. Petersburg Governor Valentina Matviyenko.

The three were immediately ordered freed. The jurors deliberated for three hours and concluded that there was a lack of evidence, the court said.

Engineer Timur Saidgareyev, 29, computer specialist Ravil Muratov, 20, and Vladislav Baranov, 17, were arrested in May and charged with plotting an attack.

Prosecutors "provided neither direct, nor circumstantial evidence in court," Saidgareyev's lawyer, Vladislav Latinsky, said following the verdict, Kommersant reported on its web site. Prosecutors have 10 days to appeal.

The Federal Security Service said investigators found grenades and plastic explosives in the raid that netted the suspects.
