Medvedev Sits Down With FT

President-elect Dmitry Medvedev sought to court Western leaders and investors in an interview with the Financial Times but would not say whether he would relax the Kremlin's grip on national politics and the media.

Medvedev told the Financial Times in an interview published Tuesday that he planned to strengthen the rule of law by bolstering the independence of courts and demanding respect for the Constitution. He said Russia could not develop economically unless judges could interpret the law without interference.

Medvedev reassured the newspaper's journalists that Russia's definition of democracy didn't differ from that of others.

But he added, "Each democracy has its history and its nationality."
