Drug Cops Detained



Four city drug police officers have been detained on suspicion of extortion, Interfax reported Wednesday.

The four officers from a Federal Drug Control Service branch in southern Moscow were arrested Tuesday after a four-month operation by internal affairs officers from the agency, an agency spokesman told Interfax.

Prosecutors in southern Moscow have opened a criminal investigation in connection with suspected abuse of office, the spokesman said. (MT)




Defense Deputy Appointed



Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov has appointed Oleg Eskin as Deputy Defense Minister, RIA-Novosti reported Wednesday.

Eskin had previously served as an adviser to Serdyukov, who became head of the Federal Tax Service before being appointed Defense Minister by President Vladimir Putin in February.

Serdyukov told top military brass Tuesday that Eskin would oversee programs to develop information technology and communications. (MT)
