What to Do: Visit the Wine Festival

INDEPENDENT MEDIA
A festival of Russian wines is starting this Friday at the All-Russia Exhibition Center, or VVTs, and continues over the weekend. More than 80 wine and other alcoholic drink-producers from various Russian regions are to attend. Visitors will be able to check out wines from the Krasnodar, Stavropol and Rostov regions, as well as cognacs from Dagestan, champagnes from St. Petersburg and dozens of other selections at factory prices. After the grand opening, featuring a show by barmen, the main event is to be a roundtable of retailers, investors and producers on developing the wine industry in Russia. Also on the agenda are degustations and workshops on such topics as wine collecting, wine and cheese, and how to buy wine, among others. The goal of the event -- the first of its kind in Moscow -- is to revitalize wine-drinking culture in Russia, according to the festival's news release. The main organizers are the Agriculture Ministry and the Moscow city government. Entry is free for the general public.
