Total Bill for Duma Campaign: $83M

Political parties spent a total of 3.4 billion rubles, or $83 million, in the State Duma elections campaign, the Central Elections Commission said Tuesday.

Commission member Yevgeny Kolyushin told reporters that the top spender was United Russia, which spent 1.24 billion rubles on the campaign, RIA-Novosti reported. Next was A Just Russia, with 708 million rubles; the Liberal Democratic Party, with 586 million rubles; and the Communist Party, with 215 million rubles.

The only other party to cross the 200 million ruble mark was the Union of Right Forces, which spent 202 million rubles, Kolyushin said.

United Russia, which won in a landslide in the Dec. 2 elections, dominated billboards. It spent little or nothing, however, for much of the publicity it received, including the blanket news coverage provided by state television for its top candidate, President Vladimir Putin.
