Moscow a Finalist for Youth Games

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Moscow and Singapore are the finalists in the bidding for the inaugural Summer Youth Olympics in 2010.

The International Olympic Committee pared the field Monday, eliminating Athens, Greece; Bangkok, Thailand; and Turin, Italy, from the race.

Moscow and Singapore were chosen in a postal vote of the IOC executive board. The full IOC will choose the winner, also by postal vote, with the result to be announced on Feb. 21.

The Youth Olympics will feature about 3,500 athletes aged 14 to 18. The event is designed to encourage youngsters to get involved in sports and spend less time in front of computer and television screens. The first Winter Youth Olympics will be in 2012.

Moscow hosted the 1980 Olympics, and the Black Sea resort of Sochi was picked last year to stage the 2014 Winter Games.
