Investigative Series: ""Putin's Legacy""

The Moscow Times launched on Friday, Feb. 1, a new series of investigative reports titled "Putin's Legacy" that examine how Russia has changed during President Vladimir Putin's eight years in power.

The first article, reported by senior news correspondent Nabi Abdullaev, takes an indepth look at how Putin has consolidated power in the Kremlin with the so-called power vertical. Having inherited a largely dysfunctional state from Boris Yeltsin, Putin faced the urgent need to create a stronger state, Abdullaev reported. With the power vertical, Putin managed to accomplish the Herculean task of restoring the state's ability to function. The whole state machinery, however, has been modeled more to serve the Kremlin than to develop the country, the report found.
