Mayor Gets 7 Years for Corruption

Tolyatti Mayor Nikolai Utkin was sentenced to seven years in prison Tuesday on corruption charges, a news report said late Tuesday.

Utkin was arrested in May on suspicion of receiving a bribe of 25 million rubles (about $1 million). The Samara Region Court convicted him on charges of bribe-taking and abuse of office, reports said.

Prosecutors said the sum was the first tranche of a 150 million ruble ($6 million) bribe Utkin allegedly demanded as part of a real estate deal.

Tolyatti, a city of over 700,000 on the Volga River, is home to AvtoVAZ, the country's biggest carmaker.

Several governors and mayors have been arrested or investigated for corruption over the past year.
